Secnidazole

Mechanism of Action
 - Interferes with electron transport in metabolic  
   pathways
- belongs to the category of antiprotozoal agents  
  drugs
-structurally related to 5-nitroimidazoles metronidazole and   tinidazole.
Used in the Treatment of :-
  • Intestinal ameobiasis
  • Fiardiasis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Bacterial vaginosis
Present in pharmacy as :-
   ● Fladazole 500 t  & sachet
   ● Flagentyl 500 t
● Secnidazole 500 t     
   ● Amebazole 1gm t   
   ● Cibazole 1gm t 
   ● Obendazole 1gm t                                                                     

Dosage of Secnidazole :-

For amoebiasis & giardiasis:
Acute :- 1 day treatment ( Adults 2 gms, Children 30mg/kg body weight) as single dose. 
Chronic :- 3 days treatment ( Adults 2 gms, Children 30mg/kg body weight) daily

Contra-Indications:-

● Pregnancy
● Lactation
● Hypersensitivity

Side Effects :-

-   Loss of appetite &
  • Nausea
  • Stomach Discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Skin Rash
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
